How to Create an Indoor Tornado

Some of the world’s best minds in Stage Design join forces to tackle an unusual challenge.

This September the award-winning Theatr na nÓg will be presenting a fascinating technical challenge at the international OISTAT@50 event, which this year takes place in Cardiff’s Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Made up of a global network of specialist theatre makers who are interested in the unlimited possibilities of technology in design, OISTAT (or the ‘Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architectes de Théâtre’) turns 50 this year. To mark the occasion, the city of Cardiff was chosen to host a week of public celebratory activities and events, research symposiums and keynotes, workshops and performances, with delegates flying into the city from all over the world. The celebrations are designed to share innovations, encourage experimentation and promote international collaborations in live performance across the globe.

The week-long event culminates in a presentation from innovative Welsh theatre company Theatr na nÓg who will perform a short scene from their award-winning play Eye of The Storm.

Written by Artistic Director Geinor Styles and Grammy Award winning musician Amy Wadge (best known for writing Thinkin’ Out Loud with Ed Sheeran), Eye of The Storm is a thrilling musical adventure aimed at young audiences which champions alternative energies and women’s achievements in STEM subjects. It tells the story of Emmie, a young carer with a knack for science, who dreams of escaping her responsibilities in rural Wales to become a storm chaser America. For a school project she comes up with the idea of harnessing the power of tornados to create an alternative energy source and in a spectacular finale the company produce an artificial tornado live on stage.

Following Theatr na nÓg’s excerpt from the play, several teams of technically adept stage design students will present live demonstrations of their answer to the question of how to create a real tornado in front of an audience in a theatre setting. Each team will have been working on the problem all week, using a variety of chemical and physical techniques under expert leadership of Sean Crowley, Head of Design at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

OISTAT@50 takes place at the RWCMD from the 27th August – 1st September 2018, with Theatr na nÓg’s tornado presentation taking place at 6pm on 1st of September.
