09th May 2013 | We need Bees

Stafford Gatehouse are buzzing about Phyl's new show!

Director and actor Phylip Harries makes a welcome return to the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre on May 28th when Theatr na nÓg's production of 'We Need Bees' makes a buzzing visit. The production especially for children and families is currently on an eight week UK tour, and for one day only, performs at the Gatehouse.

Phylip Harris from Cardiff, Wales is the director of ‘We Need Bees' and has visited the Stafford Gatehouse on many occasions – as Sir Huw Evans, the Welsh Parson in the Merry Wives of Windsor during the Shakespeare Festival; in 2011 as Dromio of Ephesus in the Comedy of Errors and in Aesops Fables. And this June, he will appear at the Gatehouse as Peter Quince in Midsummer Nights Dream.

'It's a wonderful feeling to be back in the Gatehouse' said Phyl. ' He added: ' The audiences are very welcoming and warm and we are delighted to perform such a magical, colourful show for families. I hope we get the same reaction with 'We Need Bees' as we did with 'Aesops Fables' and that children leave here having seen the show with an important message – we really do need bees!'

The show has three experienced actors playing various loveable characters - Aled Herbert and Non Haf as well as last year's actor, Jack Quick who plays Bertie Bee, a honey bee who is at the bottom of the heap of a busy beehive, spending his day pollinating boring old apples when actually he'd prefer to be free to pollinate wild flowers.
In a moment of rebellion he leaves the hive, only to put the whole colony and his best friend in danger. Now Bertie has to be brave. Will Bertie succeed and save his friends?
Theatr na nÓg's decades of experience in creating the best of children's theatre brings this wonderfully imagined story to life with lovable, spirited characters and a beautiful original score by Jak Poore. And the play is written by award winning playwright Kathryn Chandler.

The Welsh based company, who celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, is renowned for its work for young audiences, and 2013 is no exception.

'Theatr na nÓg is pleased to be building on the success of last year’s show and taking the production further afield. ' We Need Bees' will tour venues throughout Wales in both Welsh and English, and then travel to the four corners of the UK - to Ipswich, London, Birmingham, Stafford and Lancaster. The Company will also be visiting Scotland for performances at The Gardyne Theatre in Dundee,' explained Theatr na nÓg‘s Artistic Director, Geinor Styles. “Which sold out in 2 days!”

Phylip added: 'The last tour was highly successful. We have made a lot of friends at various theatres and they are looking forward to welcoming us back.'
