Presenting Shakespeare to school children in a stimulating way is a challenge that Theatr na n’Óg were not afraid to face as they embarked on a six week tour of comprehensive schools and colleges in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend. The strong cast of four in, Action to the Word, each played seven characters from five of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. The project is designed to assist GCSE and A Level students with their exams by combining extracts from Romeo & Juliet, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and King Lear with short workshop activities designed to breath life in to the words on the page. Adapted from Gulbenkian award winning production Jac Tar staged by the company in 1999. Heroic tales and swashbuckling adventures abound in this wonderful story for young theatre audiences, staged at the Dylan Thomas Theatre in Swansea from 7th September to 9th December 2005 in English and Welsh with accompanying activities at Swansea Museum. Set against the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution in South Wales, young Morris dreams of becoming a sea captain and having adventures on the high seas, to escape the toil of working in the copper works, but it is only when he stows away on his father’s ship, bound for the Cape Horn, does his adventures really begin. Surviving the Cape Horn is the greatest achievement a sailor could earn. Dates have sold out for this production. Cast: Dion Davies, Daniel Lloyd, Naomi Martell Beyond Words 2005 Following a successful pilot project in 2004, Beyond Words was back by popular demand in 2005, again offering comprehensive schools in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend an imaginative way of illustrating GCSE English set texts to Year 10 & 11 pupils. Over 1200 pupils participated in the project which toured for six weeks during February and March 2005. The set text extracts were taken from An Inspector Calls J.B Priestley, Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck and Stone Cold Robert Swindells. The project alternated performed extracts from GCSE English set texts with short workshop activities. Cast: Arwel Davies, Dion Davies David Prince, Naomi Martell Melangell/The Princess and the Hunter This spectacular musical production for families toured theatres across Wales in English and Welsh from 17th February to 18 March 2005. Featuring a cast of eight actor/musicians: Dyfrig Evans; Rhodri Evan; Carys Gwilym; Phylip Harries; Daniel Lloyd; Elin Llwyd; Jennifer Vaughan; Neil Williams; the production received fantastic reviews and responses from audiences throughout Wales. Musical Director: Greg Palmer 2004Halt! Who Goes There? A Theatre-in-Education Project for Years 5 & 6 staged at the Dylan Thomas Theatre in Swansea from 8th September to 10th December 2004. Over 5000 children from primary schools across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend saw Theatr na n'Og's production Halt! Who Goes There? set in Bridgend during World War II. Written and Directed by Geinor Jones. On the night of 10th-11th March 1945, 70 German Prisoners of War tunnelled to freedom from Camp 198 in Bridgend. It was the biggest escape attempt made by German POWs in Great Britain during the Second World War. Armed with sticks and catapults, John and his friends set about capturing the escaped POWs. In fact the whole community join in the hunt even the local girl guide troupe! However, the children discover a much darker secret. Cast: Arwel Davies, Dion Davies, Naomi Martell, Huw Tiplady Big Bad Wolf This Theatre-in-Education project for Years 1 & 2, toured primary schools in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend from 22 April-16 July 2004 Bullies everywhere beware because Little Red Riding Hood is here to save the day! The well known stories of the Three Little Pigs, The Wolf and the Seven Kids and Little Red Riding Hood are weaved together to create an exciting new play by Theatr na n'Og. Only Little Red Riding Hood can help Little Pig and the Little Kid scare off the Big Bad Wolf. She can help her friends but can she help the person who needs her help the most? - The Big Bad Wolf! This musical play for very young children (5 -7) featured original songs and the first class performance schools have come to expect from Theatr na n'Og. Beyond Words Beyond Words offered comprehensive schools an imaginative way of illustrating GCSE English set texts to Year 10 & 11 pupils. The project aimed to assist English GCSE candidates, particularly those considered to be reluctant learners, by alternating performed extracts from GCSE English set texts with short workshop activities. The set text extracts were taken from An Inspector Calls (J.B Priestley), Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck) and Stone Cold (Robert Swindells). By breathing life into the words on the page, the actors powerfully reinforced the reading process, especially for those readers who find it difficult to transform dying words into the living world of the imagination. The workshop activities interspersed with the performance extracts enabled students to explore and understand aspects of the texts, guided and supported by the four actors, using tried and tested drama workshop techniques. Each class that took part in the project also received an Education Resource Pack, compiled by secondary school English teachers. Beyond Words toured from 24th February to 1st April 2004. It is hoped that the project will be repeated every year in the spring term, look out for the booking forms in the autumn term. 2003Painting With Light This compelling new play for children aged 9 to 11 year olds explored the pioneering world of photography set against the suffering of the under classes during the Industrial Revolution. Sara Jones's father has been arrested for taking part in the Rebecca Riots, and destroying a Toll Gate. If found guilty he will be exiled to Tasmania and her family will be sent to the Poor House. She has no option but to plead for his release. She runs away from home to confront the magistrate - Mr John Dillwyn Llewellyn. But when she arrives at his home, Sara is mistaken for one of his photographic assistants, and becomes involved in his pioneering experiments with photography. Painting With Light was performed to over 100 schools from Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Bridgend at the Dylan Thomas Theatre in Swansea from September to December 2003. With, Siwan Bowen Davies (Angel, Sshh & Gluscabi), Geraint Pickard (Angel) and Crisian Hunnam, who has worked with Clwyd Theatr Cymru and Theatr Iolo.
Love Hearts This Theatre-in-Education project for years one and two features Carys and her new friend Rhys on their magical journey as they discover and learn about some of Wales' best known love stories. "I don't want to fall in love," says Carys. "Boys aren't nice, they like spiders and worms and toy cars ... " or that's what she thinks until she meets Rhys. The production toured to infant and primary schools in Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Bridgend. 3, 440 children saw the performance. Nia Ben Aur A vibrant and exciting Welsh Language production of the legendary 1970s Rock Opera, Nia Ben Aur. Visit the Nia Ben Aur website for more information. 2002Disco A Theatre-in-Education project for years 5 and 6, which toured to 29 schools in the County Borough of Neath Port Talbot, the City and County of Swansea and the County Borough of Bridgend. Disco was a pilot project funded by the W.D.A, which highlighted the idea of starting your own business as a career choice. Over 1500 children saw the production. It'll All Be Over By Christmas It'll All Be Over By Christmas is one of our most popular productions, it was played at the Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea, between September and December 2002. The production followed the trials and tribulations of Rosie, a young girl evacuated to Swansea during the Second World War. Gluscabi Gluscabi is a storytelling project for years one and two, which is based on Native American legends and stories, raising issues such as care for the environment, family and friendships. This bilingual production toured to 55 schools across three county boroughs and played to 2475 children. The company received funding from Swansea car manufacturers Visteon to tour the production to children with Special Needs. A total of eight schools took part in the project and 240 children saw the performance. 4 Million Acres When three teenagers are separated from their fellow pupils during a school trip to the darkest depths of the Welsh countryside, what do they do? Search for the others? Stay together? Or follow their survival instinct and trust no one! This production for Year Nine was funded by the Countryside Council for Wales, and deals with some of the issues raised by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act. The production was devised by the company and toured bilingually to schools across Wales between January and March 2002. 2001Angel - The Case of Elgan Jones Between September 2001 and February 2002, the Dylan Thomas Theatre in Swansea was transformed in to a Victorian Court of Law. Over 6,000 year five and six pupils played a key role in the production. They had to decide whether the defendant was either guilty or innocent which determined the outcome of the play. Angel is told through a series of Flashbacks as numerous characters give their different accounts of the days events. The accused is 12 year old Elgan Jones from Port Talbot, arrested on suspicion of trespassing, poaching, theft and murder at a local estate in the autumn of 1865. 2000Ssshhh! By Ioan Hefin Being stuck inside on a rainy day doesn't have to be boring! The production focused on using your imagination and encouraged play and creativity. A Child's Christmas in Wales By Dylan Thomas This co-production between Theatr na n'Og and the Grand Theatre in Swansea is a musical adaptation of Dylan Thomas' magical Christmas tale, A Child's Christmas in Wales. A truly enchanting and heart warming portrayal of Dylan Thomas' childhood Christmas.
