'Breeding Boxers on the Breadline'

In the deprived valleys of the 1930s, boxing was more than just a sport; it was a way out of poverty.  Merthyr-born Cuthbert Taylor, now seen as one of the best boxers of his generation, should have had the opportunity to fight for a British title, but was denied this chance because of the colour of his skin.

Perfect for Progression Step 3

Multi-award winning Theatr na nÓg’s new show introduces your children to themes such as:

  • Life in working class valleys’ communities in the 1920s-40s

  • Institutional racism, immigration and colonialism

  • The history of boxing past and present

This is our 35th year creating unique, high quality theatre for schools, currently in partnership with Swansea Museum, the National Waterfront Museum and Technocamps. Developing and supporting young people to be ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the World.

'As a teacher, Theatr Na Nog is my favourite part of the year! This was the first experience some pupils have had at a theatre and they were mesmerised.’
Amy Smith, Teacher at Blaenymaes Primary School

How much does it cost?

We receive funding from Arts Council Wales and a number of Trusts and Foundations towards this project.

We will use this funding to provide a heavily subsidised cost to you, reducing it to £9+VAT per pupil / adult plus one free adult ticket with every 10 pupils.

As a condition of this funding we need to collect feedback from every participant of this project.
To receive this reduced cost, we ask for three things in return:
1. You sign your booking contract which will be emailed to you within 7 days of receipt.
2. Complete a simple online survey within 10 days following your visit.
3. Pay your invoice within 30 days after your visit.

You will be sent reminders, so don’t worry about forgetting. Any schools not adhering to these conditions will be charged the full cost of £12.50 + VAT per person.

Teacher's Preview

10th September at 2:30pm at the Dylan Thomas Theatre.

  • Your opportunity to preview the performance at the theatre in preparation for bringing your group

  • Hear about the planned activities at the museums

  • Give us your feedback

We highly recommend one teacher from your school attends this to get the most out of your trip. For schools from further afield, we will be holding an online talk this year, but this will not include the performance.

You can let us know if you can come to this on the booking form, but we will send out reminders!
